Cimitero Comunale, Rosignano Marittimo
Facts and practical information
Rosignano Marittimo Cemetery is a small cemetery, with a historical monumental part, near Rosignano Marittimo, in the province of Livorno.
It was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was gradually expanded. The historic part is located in the part closest to the road to Rosignano and features a number of aristocratic chapels.
Prominent among these is the Gori Chapel, where Pietro Gori is buried. Built in 1907, the famous revolutionary was buried there in 1911, alongside his mother Giulia Lusoni, sister Bice and other relatives. The three busts in the chapel depict Pietro's father, mother and sister. Another statue, by Arturo Dazzi of Carrara, portrays Pietro, but was half-destroyed by the fascists in the 1930s. Today it still stands in the chapel as a reminder of the historical past.
Another monument to Pietro Gori was erected in front of the chapel 20 years later, at the expense of the area's communist section, and can be seen just in front of the main entrance, in front of the Gori Chapel. Since 2001, special lighting has decorated the statue at night.
