Church of Santa Maria dei Servi, Vicenza
Facts and practical information
Santa Maria in Foro detta dei Servi is a church in Vicenza located in Piazza Biade, a small square adjacent to Piazza dei Signori. Its construction was begun in the early fifteenth century by the order of the Servants of Mary. The portal of the church was executed by the workshop at which Andrea Palladio worked at the beginning of his career and may constitute one of his very first works.
In 1810 the parish was moved here from the Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Michael which stood at the Oratory of St. Nicholas of Tolentino. The church of St. Michael, erected about 1264, was entrusted to the Augustinians and then destroyed in 1812. This church was rich in altarpieces.
The present construction of the Church of Santa Maria in Foro was begun on the pre-existing factory after 1404, the year Vicenza came under the rule of the Republic of Venice.
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, miracles related to St. Philip Benizi occurred in the cloister of Santa Maria dei Servi in 1319.
