Facts and practical information
The shrine of St. Jerome Emiliani, officially the basilica of St. Bartholomew and St. Jerome Emiliani, is the main place of worship in Somasca and is the basilica referred to by the congregation of the Clerics Regular of Somasca.
Located at the foot of the Sacro Monte of Somasca, the basilica stands on the ancient church of St. Bartholomew, rebuilt by the Somaschi fathers beginning in 1592. The church was then enlarged and improved throughout the 17th century; other enlargement works took place in 1893 and 1967. In 1959 it was elevated by Pope John XXIII to a minor basilica.
The basilica has three naves and contains the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary on the left aisle and the chapel of St. Jerome Emiliani on the right, which contains the saint's scurolo and relics.
