Oratorio della Madonnina, Lucca
Facts and practical information
The Oratory of the Madonnina is a church in Lucca.
It was built in the 17th century in memory of the destroyed basilica of San Pier Maggiore. On the exterior are three bas-reliefs illustrating Stories of the three saints most venerated in Lucca, Paulinus, Martin and Peter. Inside, redone in the 18th century, on the high altar is a fragment of a larger fresco composition depicting the Madonna and Child between Saints Avertanus and Romeo, from the mid-15th century, referable to Borghese di Pietro from the ancient church of San Pietro. The same provenance has the tomb slab depicting the two pilgrim saints, from the late fifteenth century, referable to Matteo Civitali, and possibly also the fifteenth-century bas-relief with the Trinity and Saints Peter and Paul.
