Delizia di Copparo, Copparo
Facts and practical information
The Delizia di Copparo was one of the 19 prestigious residences of the Este family. It is located in the historic center of Copparo.
It appeared as a turreted castle and was frequented by Niccolò III and Borso d'Este with their respective courts. Under Leonello d'Este frescoes, now lost, were painted by Nicolò Panizzati.
After being sacked and severely damaged by the Venetians in 1482, Ercole II commissioned its reconstruction from the architect Terzo dé Terzi, who, between 1540 and 1547, erected a sumptuous palace with four corner towers and large rooms frescoed by Benvenuto Tisi da Garofalo and Girolamo da Carpi.
In 1808 it was severely damaged by fire and partially demolished. In 1872 the remains were incorporated into the new City Hall building.
