Temple of Venus and Roma, Rome
Facts and practical information
The Temple of Venus and Roma, situated in the heart of Rome, Italy, is an ancient edifice that once stood as the largest temple in the Eternal City. Dedicated to the goddesses Venus Felix, the bringer of good fortune, and Roma Aeterna, the personification of the city, this architectural marvel is a testament to the grandeur of Roman religion and culture.
Conceived by Emperor Hadrian and completed in 135 AD, the Temple of Venus and Roma was designed with a unique back-to-back structure housing two main chambers, each one enshrining a statue of the temple's respective deity. The temple's design was revolutionary for its time, featuring a grand layout that included a portico with ten columns on the front and back, and twenty columns along the sides, creating an imposing rectangular perimeter.
Although the temple has suffered damage over the centuries, including destruction in the 9th century and subsequent earthquakes, it has been partially restored, allowing visitors to appreciate its historical significance. The remaining columns and the platform of the temple offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing the scale and ambition of Roman architecture.
