Fetta di Polenta, Turin
Facts and practical information
Casa Scaccabarozzi, commonly known to the people of Turin as Fetta di polenta, is a historic building in Turin located in the Vanchiglia district, on the corner of Corso San Maurizio and Via Giulia di Barolo; in the past it was also known as "Casa luna" and "the sword." Its uniqueness and the origin of its nickname lie in its yellow ochre color and especially in the unique trapezoidal and very thin plan of the building, resembling a "slice of polenta" precisely, and causing one of the side elevations to measure just fifty-four centimeters.
Designed by Alessandro Antonelli, the official name comes from the surname of the architect's wife, Francesca Scaccabarozzi, a noblewoman originally from Cremona. The couple lived in the building for only a few years, later moving to the adjacent building, also designed by Antonelli, at 9 Vanchiglia Street, corner of Corso San Maurizio.
