Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Caltanissetta
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a church in Caltanissetta, declared a national monument in 1902. It stands close to the castle of Pietrarossa, on the latter's northern side, and was the city's second parish, becoming the city's parish seat in 1239 and, later, royal chapel of the Swabian House.
The original name seems to have been that of Maria Santissima Assunta, later changed to the present one following the donation of a painting of Our Lady of the Angels, now kept in the Church of the College of Mary. It is also referred to as Santa Maria la Vetere to distinguish it from the Cathedral, named Santa Maria la Nova.
