Trevi Fountain, Rome
Facts and practical information
The Trevi Fountain, nestled in the heart of Rome, Italy, is an emblematic masterpiece of Baroque art and one of the city's most cherished tourist attractions. This monumental fountain, standing at approximately 26 meters high and 49 meters wide, is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.
Commissioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732 and completed by several architects and sculptors, with Nicola Salvi and later Giuseppe Pannini being key figures, the Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762. The central figure of the fountain is Neptune, god of the sea, riding a chariot in the form of a shell, pulled by sea horses guided by Tritons. The sculptures depict the taming of the waters, a theme in keeping with the fountain's connection to the ancient Roman aqueducts that supplied water to Rome.
According to popular legend, tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain ensures a return to Rome. Millions of visitors flock to the site annually to partake in this tradition, contributing to the estimated €1.4 million that is collected from the fountain each year. The funds are used for charity works and maintenance of the historic site.
The fountain underwent an extensive €2.2 million restoration, sponsored by the fashion brand Fendi, which was completed in 2015. Today, the Trevi Fountain's intricate details and grand scale can be admired in their fully restored glory, making it a must-see for anyone visiting the Eternal City.
