Collegiata di San Tommaso da Villanova, Castel Gandolfo
Facts and practical information
The pontifical collegiate church of St. Thomas of Villanova is the principal place of Catholic worship in the town of Castel Gandolfo, in the metropolitan city of Rome Capital and suburbicarian see of Albano, parish of the parish of the same name, which includes in its territory the rectory of the church of Madonna del Lago at Lake Albano.
Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and commissioned by Pope Alexander VII, it owes its importance to the nearby Papal Villas complex of Castel Gandolfo.
While the Pontifical Parish of St. Anne is competent about the pastoral care within the Vatican State, the Pontifical Parish of St. Thomas of Villanova is responsible for the pastoral care about the territory of the Pontifical Villas, that is, towards the related employees. Both Pontifical Parishes depend on the Vicariate General for the Vatican City State and Papal Villas, whose Vicar is currently His Most Reverend Eminence Cardinal Mauro Gambetti. The church is in fact located in an extraterritorial area, as are the adjoining areas of the Papal Palace and the attached Villas.
