Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pisa
Facts and practical information
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, an architectural anomaly and a symbol of Italy, is a freestanding bell tower located in the city of Pisa. Famous for its unintended tilt, the tower began to lean during construction in the 12th century due to the soft ground which could not properly support the structure's weight. The inclination, which has since been partially corrected, continues to draw tourists from around the world to this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Standing at a height of approximately 56 meters, the tower was completed in the 14th century, despite its precarious lean. It has eight stories, including the chamber for the seven bells. The largest bell was installed in 1655. The tower's design is characterized by its white and grey marble, Romanesque columns, and arches that reflect the architectural style of medieval Italy.
Visitors can climb the 294 steps to the top of the tower, where they are rewarded with a stunning view of the city and the surrounding Tuscan landscape. The climb itself provides a unique experience as the tilt of the building creates a surreal perspective, challenging one's sense of balance.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is part of a larger complex of buildings known as the Piazza dei Miracoli or Square of Miracles that includes the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistry, and the Campo Santo. This sacred area is renowned for its outstanding architectural ensemble, of which the tower is the most iconic element.
Open to the public year-round, the tower has undergone numerous stabilization efforts to ensure its preservation for future generations. While it once stood at an alarming angle of 5.5 degrees, stabilization work in the late 20th and early 21st centuries has reduced the lean to about 3.97 degrees.
