Mastio della Cittadella, Turin
Facts and practical information
The citadel of Turin was a pentagonal Savoy fortress located along the ancient city walls of Turin, set southwest of the historic center.
Erected in the period 1564-1577 from designs by Francesco Paciotto and guided by the work of General Robilant, it was commissioned by Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, who intended to modernize the urban defenses after the Duchy's capital moved from Chambéry to Turin. It is best remembered as the scene of the War of the Spanish Succession, during the days of the 1706 siege by King Louis XIV's Franco-Spanish army.
All that survives of the ancient fortification is the Keep, i.e. the two-story entrance building, home to the National Artillery Historical Museum.
