Monte Finestra, Tramonti
Facts and practical information
Mount Finestra is a mountain in the Campanian Antiapennines, located in the province of Salerno.
Standing 1,138 m above sea level, it serves as the eastern edge of the Lattari Mountains, as well as a kind of natural border between the towns of Cava de' Tirreni and Tramonti.
The toponym derives from the cleft in the rock present on the summit, which is particularly visible in winter and autumn, when the vegetation is less dense, even from the center of the Metellian valley.
Annually, an uphill race is organized from the town center to the north peak, for a positive elevation gain of about 950m.
An American plane crashed there in the 1950s, and pieces of the plane occasionally resurface. The plane was seen by people living below the mountain as a flame in the sky before the crash.
