St. Augustine Church, Montepulciano
Facts and practical information
The church of Saint Augustine is located in Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, in the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza.
Founded in 1285, it was completely renovated in the 15th century, with Michelozzo di Bartolomeo's work on the lower part of the façade, which is marked by fluted pilasters, surmounted by niches framing the portal, in whose lunette is a terracotta relief of the Madonna and Saints John the Baptist and Augustine.
The upper part of the facade was built later. Restorations carried out in 1784-1791 altered the original layout, of which the single nave remains.
Inside, a Resurrection of Lazarus by Alessandro Allori, a St. Nicholas of Tolentino by Giovanni di Paolo, a polychrome wooden Crucifix by Antonio da Sangallo, and a Crucifixion with mourners by Lorenzo di Credi.
