Cimitero Militare tedesco di Costermano, Costermano sul Garda
Facts and practical information
The Costermano German military cemetery is located in a hilly area on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the municipality of Costermano.
This cemetery contains the bodies of 22,028 German and other fallen soldiers of World War II, taken from war cemeteries and other burial grounds in northern Italy. Among the soldiers interred here is Franz Gall, division general of the Wehrmacht.
The presence in the cemetery of 43 SS officers and about five hundred non-commissioned officers and militiamen of the same formation, some of whom were responsible for very serious crimes against humanity, has aroused controversy. Among them was the infamous Christian Wirth. For this reason, in 2006 the German consul in Milan, Axel Hartmann, stated that the cemetery is meant to be "a place of conscience and remembrance, but also of warning."
