Torre Cerrano, Pineto
Facts and practical information
The Tower of Cerrano is one of the ancient coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples, located on the Adriatic coast in Pineto, in the province of Teramo; the tower is located two kilometers south of the town, and stands out sharply on the horizon on a small hill near the beach.
It owes its name to the nearby Cerrano stream, whose name in turn is probably derived from that of the goddess Ceres. The stream originates in the hills of Atri from ancient qanat-type fountains and flows into the sea about a kilometer south of the tower, in the municipality of Silvi.
The area was once the site of Atri's ancient port; in the stretch of sea near the tower and creek lie submerged the remains of an L-shaped pier, masonry works and various artifacts.
It is currently one of the headquarters of IZSAM.
In February 2008, the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area Management Consortium was established, a preparatory act to the issuance of the ministerial decree establishing the marine park. The process had begun in 1997 when the "Torre di Cerrano Marine Park" was included in Law 334. After many years, with constant efforts by local governments and especially with the involvement of associations and stakeholders, on April 7, 2010 the Decree of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea of October 21, 2009, establishing the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area, was published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic.
