Santa Maria in Castello, Vecchiano
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Maria in Castello is located in Vecchiano.
Located in a pleasant and evocative place, the church appears to have existed since 1136, included in the ancient castle of Vecchiano mentioned as early as 1120 in the Pisan cathedral documents. Listed in 1276 among the suffragan churches of the parish of San Marco and Santo Stefano di Rigoli, it later turns out to be dependent on the patronage of the most important Pisan families. The church, which became a sanctuary during the Jubilee of 2000, has liturgical use reserved for the parish priest of Vecchiano. Of the original structures, placed on the castle knoll, only part of the north side and the head of the west side remain visible on the outside of the modern sanctuary. The interior has a single hall. Climbing the four steps in the garden in front of the entrance door, one notices to the left of the entrance, a plaque where it is written that Our Lady from the steps of the church healed the city of Livorno from the plague.
