Area naturale marina protetta Portofino
Facts and practical information
The Portofino Natural Marine Protected Area is a marine protected area established by decree of the Ministry of the Environment on April 26, 1999, based in Santa Margherita Ligure, and is located in the eastern territory of the metropolitan city of Genoa between the municipalities of Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. The area has been declared a Special Protected Area of Mediterranean Interest.
Currently under consideration, at the express request of the reserve's municipalities themselves in the Chamber of Deputies, is the proposal to transform the Portofino regional park into a national park, incorporating in the new territorial boundaries also the marine protected area. The proposal, which was presented to the Chamber at a hearing on January 24, 2007, but had already been put forward in 2004, was welcomed by the municipalities and other interested entities, especially after the recent consensus of Santa Margherita Ligure, home of the regional park authority and the marine protected reserve.
