St. Peter's Church, Lonate Ceppino
Facts and practical information
The church of San Pietro, known as the Consecrato, is a church in Lonate Ceppino, in the province of Varese, dating from the 12th century and currently not in use. It stands on the edge of the ridge that, to the west, overlooks the Olona River and its valley. It was around this church that the first inhabited nucleus of the village arose.
The earliest written evidence of the church's existence is found in a document dated May 7, 1144, by which a certain Boniface, son of Henry of Caidate, bestowed a donation to the church in exchange for the celebration of offices in suffrage of his soul at the time of his death.
The church consists of two cores from different eras, an older one to the south, and a more recent one to the north.
Around 1755, the Busto Arsizio painter Biagio Bellotti made the decorations of the church's right chapel: the semi-elliptical dome with the Exaltation of the Cross and the four pendentives with as many Allegories of Virtues. The same painter painted a Deposition in the chapel of the "mortuary," today badly deteriorated.
