San Pietro a Coppito, L'Aquila
Facts and practical information
The church of St. Peter in Coppito is a religious building in L'Aquila, the capital of the quarter of St. Peter.
It owes its construction to the castellans of Coppito, who thus contributed to the founding of the city in the 13th century, but it is considered the oldest of L'Aquila's intra moenia churches since it was built on the site of an earlier temple. In the 14th century it was elevated to headquarter church, a title it shares with fellow towns Santa Giusta, Santa Maria Paganica and San Marciano.
The church boasts a long and complex building history, concluded in 1971 with the restoration of the Romanesque-style structure. Damaged by the 2009 earthquake, it is currently uninhabitable and undergoing renovation and consolidation work.
