The ancient parish church of San Fortunato, rises less than a kilometer outside the urban area of Montefalco, atop a hillock almost entirely surrounded by a forest of centuries-old elm trees where there are caves, dug out of clay, formerly used for pagan and then early Christian rites when they became, as told by popular tradition, a place of retreat for St. Fortunato who lived between 340 and 400.
