San Matteo, Lucca
Facts and practical information
The church of San Matteo is a church in Lucca located in the square of the same name.
Already in existence at the end of the 9th century, it was totally rebuilt in 1290, as an epigraph now preserved in an inner courtyard attests. To this phase of work can be assigned the central portal, which reproduces in now tired and repetitive forms the pattern of Guiding portals, with projecting lions on either side of the architrave. The chronicler and storyteller Giovanni Sercambi was buried in the church. It was closed to worship in the early 20th century.
