Facts and practical information
Porta Nova, or Porta Salis or Solis or, again, Volterrana, is one of the gates that provided access to the medieval town of Colle di Val d'Elsa.
It was built of stone and brick to replace the Selva Gate, which was destroyed during the siege of the city in 1479.
Flanked by two powerful bastions and equipped with a moat at the front, it represents a superb example of Renaissance military architecture.
The original design is attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo.
