Scoglio della Regina, Acquappesa
Facts and practical information
Scoglio della Regina is a rock in Italy located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Calabria.
Currently detached about 30 m from the beach due to coastal erosion, in the last century it was instead adjacent to the shoreline of the coast, and now surrounded by artificial stone boulders. About 20 m high, it is the most famous stacks on the Cedar Coast.
The overlooking stretch of beach administratively belongs to Acquappesa, an Italian municipality in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria Region, and not to the neighboring municipality of Guardia Piemontese, as is often believed.
The name derives from a number of local legends, the best-known of which relates to Queen Isabella of France-the bride of Edward II of England-who, bathing near the beach at the mouth of the Bagni River, where the hot sulfurous waters also flowed, springing from the rocky hills above the Terme Luigiane, is said to have been expecting her desired child.
