Convento dei Cappuccini, Galatina
Facts and practical information
The convent of Capuchin friars arose between 1570 and 1580 near a small church dedicated to the Holy Spirit, according to the testamentary provision of the jurist Nicola Zimara, which provided for the sale of all his property to be used for the building of a Franciscan convent.
Work on the present church, which lasted for about a century, was completed in 1681. The Capuchins continued to occupy the complex until the second half of the nineteenth century, when, following the suppression of the Order in 1866, the convent was put to different uses, housing first a barracks and then a lazaret.
