Fontana delle Catene, Benevento
Facts and practical information
The Fountain of Chains is a monumental Baroque fountain in Benevento, located in Orsini Square. It is popularly given this name because it is surrounded by chains.
The fountain was erected at the behest of Archbishop Vincenzo Maria Orsini, on September 5, 1705, in the center of the square that for five centuries had housed the Basilica of St. Bartholomew, which had collapsed in the 1688 earthquake, was rebuilt by him and was irreparably destroyed by the 1702 earthquake. It was built by architect Nicola Colle De Vita, probably based on a design by Roman architect Carlo Buratti. In 1778, the townspeople wanted to allocate a blessing statue of Pope Benedict XIII on top of it.
The bombings of September 1943 severely damaged both the fountain and the statue. A long and careful restoration was then carried out by Roman master Giovanni Sparla on behalf of the Soprintendenza ai Beni Architettonici; but it was possible to recover only part of the original artifact. The statue was placed back in place on June 21, 1992.
