Santuario Nostra Signora della Vittoria, Mignanego
Facts and practical information
The shrine of Our Lady of Victory is a Catholic place of worship located in the municipality of Mignanego, 46 Via alla Vittoria, in the metropolitan city of Genoa.
The shrine rises on the Pertuso Pass, in a dominant position over the Polcevera Valley, at an altitude of 650 m, near the place where on May 10, 1625 a few soldiers of the Republic of Genoa, flanked by volunteers from the Valpolcevera, led by the parish priest of Montanesi, defeated a strong Franco-Savoia army commanded by Duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy and composed, it is said, of more than 8,000 men. Because of this defeat, the Duke had to give up his aims for the city of Genoa.
At the site of the battle, in thanksgiving for Our Lady's intercession, this shrine was erected, and the city of Genoa was consecrated to "Our Lady Queen of Victory."
From the forecourt there is a wide view of the Valpolcevera, from the Giovi Pass to the sea.
The sanctuary can be reached today from Provincial Road 35 dei Giovi, following a detour right at the top of the pass, but the ancient roads, the one that climbs from the village of Montanesi and the one from the Pertuso Pass, a pass between the Valpolcevera and the Scrivia Valley are still passable.
Through the Pertuso Pass passed one of the ancient communication routes between Genoa and the Po Valley. This road, which descended into the Scrivia valley at Vallecalda, surpassed in importance in medieval times the Via Postumia, and from the 13th century to the early decades of the 19th century it became the main route of communication between Genoa and the Po Valley. The ashes of St. Augustine, which the Lombard king Liutprand had transported via the port of Genoa from Africa to Pavia, passed through this route in 722.
