Chiesa di San Salvatore di Sotto, Ascoli Piceno
Facts and practical information
The church of San Salvatore di Sotto built following the canons of the Romanesque style, currently deconsecrated, is located in the city of Ascoli Piceno. It is so named to distinguish it from the church of San Salvatore di Sopra, which was built outside the city walls beyond Porta Romana.
The small church stands south of the Boiler Zone, a short distance from Cecco Bridge in the Porta Maggiore neighborhood, on the top of a knoll that Ascolan tradition identifies as Colle di Marte, at the foot of San Marco Hill.
In this place the custom of the people of Ascoli to venerate the Savior and attend the mass celebrated in the churchyard on Easter Monday was consolidated over time. Indeed, it was customary to reach the knoll and "pass the water" of the Castellano stream.
