Grotte is Zuddas, Santadi
Facts and practical information
The Is Zuddas caves are located in the southwestern part of Sardinia in the territory of the municipality of Santadi in the Sulcis region from which it is six kilometers away.
The cavity develops within Mount Meana, a massif consisting of very ancient dolomitic rocks dating back 530 million years. The cave, which is still active, was discovered by cavers in 1971. The constant internal temperature is 16 degrees, with a humidity level close to 100 percent.
Over a distance of 500 meters, one can admire impressive concretions, stalactites and stalagmites, columns, tube-formed stalactites, cannulae, and especially the rare needle-like aragonites, concentrated in a single hall and called "cave flowers" by cavers. These clumps of white crystal grow in every direction in spectacular threadlike formations, making the cave unique.
The skeletal remains of Prolagus sardus, a hare-sized lagomorph found only in Sardinia and Corsica and extinct about 400 years ago, can be seen in the initial part of the cavity.
