Castello di Rodigo, Rodigo
Facts and practical information
Rodigo Castle was a Renaissance military structure, built on a pre-existing medieval construction.
The castle was rebuilt and enlarged by Vespasiano Gonzaga in 1582, who reinforced the structure. Possession passed to the Duke of Mantua Vincenzo I Gonzaga in 1591. Since then the building housed the public granary, which contained all foodstuffs.
Under Duke Vincenzo II Gonzaga the structure was transformed into a fortress, equipped with trenches, elevations and ramparts. Seven crenellated towers, drawbridge and moat were part of the complex, making the fortress impregnable.
Dismantled around 1630, a square crenellated tower with a clock remains intact of the castle today.
