San Nicola da Bari, Soriano nel Cimino
Facts and practical information
The church of St. Nicholas of Bari is the parish church of Soriano nel Cimino, in the province of Viterbo and diocese of Civita Castellana.
Built in the neoclassical style between 1782 and 1791 to the design of architect Giulio Camporese, it was constructed as a result of the dimensions having become insufficient of the previous parish seat, the church of St. Eutizio. Its construction involved the destruction of two pre-existing churches and substantial work to level the steep terrain.
The facade with the two side bell towers is entirely of exposed brick and is divided into two orders, separated by a cornice: the lower one in Doric style, and the upper one in Ionic style.
The interior is in the shape of a Greek cross with three naves and an ornate dome.
A Gothic-style statue depicting St. Anthony of Padua and a baptismal font from the Renaissance period are preserved there.
