Chiesa Prepositurale di San Vittore, Arsago Seprio
Facts and practical information
The basilica of San Vittore martire is a church that is part, together with the baptistery in front, of one of the most important Romanesque complexes in Lombardy. It is located in Arsago Seprio, in the province of Varese, about 17 km from the capital.
The church dates back to the 9th-12th centuries and was built on an older building dating from the 5th-6th centuries, traces of which are still visible outside the apse, probably under the impetus of Arnolfo II da Arsago, archbishop of Milan from 998 to 1018.
The construction of the church and baptistery was entrusted to the Maestri comacini, but it is unclear whether the two buildings are coeval, or made in different periods.
