The shrine of Santa Maria di Galloro and its garden is a place of Catholic worship located in the locality of Galloro in the municipality of Ariccia, in the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale, in the Castelli Romani area, in the suburbicarian Diocese of Albano Laziale.
The shrine of Galloro is one of the most important and frequented Marian shrines in Lazio; it is also listed among the architectural monuments of Lazio by virtue of the contribution made by the famous architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini to the design of some of its parts. The shrine, dedicated to the miraculous image of Our Lady of Galloro, was built between 1624 and 1633, and the adjoining convent since 1817 has been entrusted to the care of the Society of Jesus.The shrine with the sacred image have been the subject of apostolic visits by numerous popes, such as Pope Urban VIII, Pope Alexander VII, Pope Clement XI, Pope Benedict XIV, Pope Clement XIII and Pope Clement XIV, Pope Pius VII, Pope Gregory XVI and finally Pope Pius IX.Today the shrine is constituted as a parish, with more than 3,000 souls, which is joined by the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta in Ariccia.Our Lady of Galloro is venerated by the people of Ariccia three times a year: on December 8, with the traditional feast of the Signorina, established in 1656 to thank Our Lady for saving the town from the plague; on the second Sunday in October, the anniversary of the solemn coronation of the image; and on Pentecost Day, the anniversary of the consecration of the church in 1633.
