Castello di Asolo, Asolo
Facts and practical information
Asolo Castle is a fortress located in the center of the village of the same name, in the highest part of the inhabited area. The castle, as well as the village of medieval origin, is located on top of a hill that has a peculiar elongated shape over which Monte Ricco dominates: this unusual shape probably gave the village its name, which comes from the Latin Acelum, meaning "sharp place." This area, due to the view overlooking the entire area below, has always been considered particularly important strategically.
Also known as the Praetorian Palace, until the construction of the medieval walls that joined it to the Rocca, it had an independent and, in part, opposed life to the Rocca.
The castle has been home to such illustrious personalities as Queen Caterina Cornaro of Cyprus and humanist Pietro Bembo.
