Chiesa di San Basilio, Sennori
Facts and practical information
The church of San Basilio Magno is a place of worship located in Sennori, in the square of the same name. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is the seat of the parish of the same name and is part of the archdiocese of Sassari.
Built in the 14th century, it had until 1553 a single nave and five altars. Restored and finally enlarged between 1945 and 1958 according to a design by architect Vico Mossa, the building now consists of a "single nave formed by four rectangular bays with Gothic cross vaulting" while "the vaults rest on the ambit walls and semicircular ribs." Restoration work changed its architectural style from Romanesque to Aragonese Gothic. To the left of the building is a small bell tower. Inside the church is a 16th-century altarpiece of the Cagliari school representing The Coronation of the Virgin.
In the immediate vicinity of the church, on land belonging to it, is a small pre-Nuragic necropolis known as the "domus de janas of the Orto del beneficio parrocchiale."
