Grotta Su Marmuri, Ulassai

The cave of Su Marmuri, is located in the territory of the municipality of Ulassai, in the Barbaric subregion of Ogliastra, in central-eastern Sardinia, under the characteristic heel of the town itself, is considered among the most impressive cavities in Europe.
The visible part, entirely flat and with two characteristic underground lakes, is 850 m long. Special features of the cave are the impressive halls with a very high vault, numerous calcitic concretions, grand stalactites, stalagmites and columns.
The cave's fauna includes Ovobathysciola gestroi, an underground beetle frequent in the heels, the presence of a species of the Sardinian geotriton, a peculiar amphibian adapted to cave life called Speleomanthes imperialis, as well as a large colony of bats.
