Chiesa di San Marco al Pozzo
Facts and practical information
The church of San Marco al Pozzo is a small rural church located at Pozzo di Valgatara near the town of Marano di Valpolicella.
Formerly dedicated to St. Stephen, it is attested in the 13th century, but may date from the previous century. It retains its original Romanesque appearance, despite remodeling in the 17th and 18th centuries. The entrance is rectangular, in Lessinia stone. The interior has a single nave, enriched by a 16th-century chapel and decorated with 14th-century frescoes on all interior walls. A Roman epigraph with a vow to Jupiter, possibly from a local place of worship, is inserted on one of the walls. The church contains an altarpiece by Flemish artist Michel Meeves from about 1550.
