The War Memorial, also known as the War Memorial, is an imposing granite stele made by sculptor Giannino Castiglioni, located in Lecco, Lombardy, on the shore of the gulf of the lake of the same name near the mouth of the Caldone stream.
The work, created between 1922 and 1926 by Milanese sculptor Giannino Castiglioni, was inaugurated on Nov. 4 of that year on the eighth anniversary of National Unity commemorating Italy's victory in World War I. The inauguration was attended by Duke of Aosta Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, grandson of the first king of Italy.
Castiglioni, who was among the most significant sculptors of the Italian twentieth century, wanted to collect in the monument The Resurrection of the Fatherland through a bronze work at the base of the stele depicting moments in the soldier's life.
