Porto di Saline Joniche

The port of Saline Joniche, located in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Montebello Jonico in the province of Reggio Calabria, was built for the purpose of serving the industrial area of Liquichimica Biosintesi, a group of industrial settlements, built in the 1970s with funds from the so-called "Colombo Package" and practically never put into operation, which give the area the appearance of a small industrial cemetery.

On December 12, 2003, a storm surge caused the central part of the 100-m-long breakwater pier to collapse. It is currently silted up due to the play of currents, which carry sand wrested from the Ionian coast, obstructing its mouth.
