The Roman theater of Volterra was brought to light in the 1950s by archaeological excavations conducted in the locality of Vallebuona by Enrico Fiumi, a Volterra historian: some inpatients of the Volterra Psychiatric Hospital were used as workers, as recalled by a plaque placed at the building's entrance.
