Towers of Bologna, Bologna
Facts and practical information
Bologna's Towers – Rising above the city, symbols of the Middle Ages
In the very heart of Bologna, one of the most picturesque cities in Italy, stand two imposing symbols of its rich history – the Towers of Bologna. These are two medieval towers that have become an integral part of the city's skyline and witnesses to its long, tumultuous past.
The Asinelli Tower, the taller of the two, measures 97.2 meters and has dominated the city since the year 1119. It is one of the few remaining towers that were once a characteristic feature of the Bolognese landscape – estimates suggest that there could have been as many as 100 of them at the peak of their construction. Beside it stands the slightly shorter Garisenda Tower, whose tilt is visible to the naked eye and currently measures about 3.2 meters.
Both towers, although built around the same time, have completely different histories. The Asinelli Tower was constructed by the Asinelli family, as a symbol of their power and social status. Over time, the tower became the property of the city and served as a prison and an astronomical observatory. Today, after climbing 498 steps, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of Bologna and its surroundings.
The Towers of Bologna are not only a reminder of the city's rich history, but also a valuable monument of architecture. In the past, the towers were a symbol of the wealth and power of local noble families, who competed with each other by building taller and more impressive structures. Today, they are an irreplaceable landmark in the city and attract hordes of tourists wishing to feel the spirit of ancient times.
