St. Lawrence Church
Facts and practical information
The church of San Lorenzo, is located in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Osilo. It overlooks the only road that crosses the hamlet and connects the municipality of Osilo with Sennori. The apse stands on the edge of a limestone cliff overlooking the river that flows below.
The church consists of a hall divided into four bays, the last of which is the chancel with a quadrangular plan, oriented to the east, the sacristy and the antisacristy.
The earliest known document in which the church is mentioned dates back to 1688.
For the plan, architectural elements and construction technique, the reference architectural model is late Gothic. However, on the plan form only assumptions can be made, in fact only a part of the chancel with two buttresses remains of the primitive structure.
The church underwent numerous remodeling and readjustments presumably in the 18th or 19th century; in particular, to allow for its enlargement, the cross vault was demolished and replaced in the chancel area by the present barrel vault, and in the rest of the hall by pointed diaphragm arches, on which rested the wooden structure of the double-pitched roof.
The last major alterations date from the 20th century at a time certainly after 1943, most likely in 1950 on the occasion of the holy year. The interventions affected the roof, in fact the original wooden roof was replaced with a latero-cement structure. But the major changes concerned the facade, which was decorated with various architectural elements made of concrete with metal reinforcement, giving it a vaguely eclectic appearance.
