Santa Maria della Lode
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Maria della Lode a Vescovìo is a Catholic place of worship located in Vescovio, a hamlet of Torri in Sabina, in the province of Rieti.
Also known by the names "Sabina Cathedral" and "Santa Maria in Vescovìo," it stands on the plain where the ancient Roman city of Forum Novum once stood. Its construction began in the 8th century; it was then destroyed by the Saracens and rebuilt and restored several times.
The one-nave interior is adorned with a fresco dating from the 13th-14th centuries depicting the Last Judgment and episodes from the Old and New Testaments. The semianular crypt dates from the 11th century, and the imposing bell tower, consisting mostly of spoil from the remains of the ancient Forum Novum, is from the 10th-11th centuries.
