Parco Ugo Foscolo, Busto Arsizio
Facts and practical information
Ugo Foscolo Park is a park in the municipality of Busto Arsizio that owes its name to its location: in fact, it is located along the street of the same name, specifically between the church of San Gregorio Magno in Camposanto and the small building on Via Ludovico Ariosto. To the east it is bordered by a recently constructed Paolo Candiani High School of Art building.
It stands on the area once occupied by the old city cemetery, built when the former campisants of the churches of St. Michael and St. John had become insufficient. The cemetery was decommissioned and turned into a park in 1918, a few years after the construction of the Busto Arsizio Monumental Cemetery. The cemetery near the church of St. Gregory the Great, when it was built, was located outside the village, next to the lazaret put in operation because of the plague of 1630.
Inside the park is the monument to the veterans of the patriotic battles, inaugurated in 1909, and consisting of two Doric columns with a short entablature; it was designed by engineer Luigi Carlo Cornelli and made by sculptors Giulio Cassani and Enrico Sirtori.
On May 21, 1964, the Wonder Train was inaugurated in the presence of Mayor Rossi and with the blessing of Monsignor Galimberti.
In 2011 the park was the site of a play about the plague of 1630.
