Ekklesiasterion
Facts and practical information
The Ekklesiasterion of Morgantina is a complex similar to a Greek theater and is thought to have had a function similar to the Roman comitium. Although the dating is uncertain it is thought to have been built in the late 4th century BC by Timoleon.
It is a complex of three tiers of steps, whose functions included connecting the lower agora to the upper agora; it served as the seat of assembly.
The podium from which the orators spoke was arranged in front of the Pritaneum. This arrangement indicates that Morgantina was a free polis.
In the year 317 BC. Agathocles, an exile from Syracuse, used this place to gather an army of 1,500 Morgantine soldiers to regain power at home.
