Cappella di Santa Maria alla Trappola, Maremma Regional Park
Facts and practical information
The chapel of Santa Maria alla Trappola is a religious building located in the municipality of Grosseto. Its location is at the Podere della Trappola, within the Maremma Natural Park, at the farm of San Mamiliano alla Trappola, not far from the tower of the same name.
The small church arose as a rural chapel within the estate of San Mamiliano, which together with that of San Carlo fell within the boundaries of the larger Trappola estate. The religious building, which arose in the area where the lost church of San Mamiliano in Tumolo stood, was built as a place of prayer for the farmers and laborers who served within the vast estate; its origins are probably post-seventeenth-century, and its foundation is thought to have followed the disappearance of the pre-existing church located near the Trappola tower.
The chapel of Santa Maria alla Trappola presents itself as a simple single-room building with a rectangular plan and a gabled roof. The entrance portal, opens in the center of the façade, preceded by a pair of steps; at the top it is closed by an architrave on which rests a round arch in neo-Romanesque style bordering a lunette.
A series of round-arched single-lancet windows open on the lateral sides and in the apsidal area; the interior is single-room with a truss roof and the remains of an altar at the rear.
