Santuario della Santissima Trinità
Facts and practical information
The Shrine of the Holy Trinity is a small shrine of the Catholic Church, dedicated to the Trinity, located in the territory of the municipality of Vallepietra, on the border of Lazio and Abruzzo, in a mountainous area at an altitude of 1337 m above sea level. Included in the territory of the diocese of Anagni-Alatri, it lies below a large overhanging rocky cliff of the Mount Autore mountain range, along the southwestern slope of the Simbruini mountain range, overlooking the Simbrivio valley below.
A frequent destination for devotees, pilgrims, the curious and hikers, mainly from Lazio, Abruzzo and Campania, it can be easily reached by climbing from Vallepietra for about 14 km of paved road, or from the neighboring Abruzzo territory of Cappadocia-Camporotondo by crossing the dirt road surrounded by centuries-old beech forests of the karst plateau of Campo della Pietra, a locality also known for being the site of the set of the film They Called It Trinity... In addition to the old shrine there is a small modern installation for religious celebrations.
The traditional pilgrimage to the shrine was the subject of the 1939 documentary film Il pianto delle zitelle directed by Giacomo Pozzi Bellini and a 1958 short film by Gian Vittorio Baldi.
