Torre di Barì, Bari Sardo
Facts and practical information
The tower of Barì is an ancient medieval tower located on the east coast of Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro.
It is located along the east coast of Sardinia, in Ogliastra, about four kilometers from the town of Bari Sardo. The construction of the tower in the area of Barì, was recommended in 1572 by the captain of Iglesias Marco Antonio Camos, since that site was found to be much frequented by privateers.
The tower is built of local granitic and basaltic rocks. Truncated cone-shaped, it has a height of about 13 m and a diameter of about 11 m at the base and 8 m at the terrace. Inside there is a small circular chamber of about 14 m².
The tower had lookout functions and, with a view of 15 kilometers, observed the area stretching from Cape Bella Vista to Cape Sferracavallo; it also controlled the mouth of the rio Mannu, a destination dear to pirates for water supply. The cost of building the tower fell on the population of the village, which also had to provide for the livelihood of the men employed.
