Cantina Petra, Suvereto
Facts and practical information
The Petra Winery, or Moretti Winery, is a building located within the municipality of Suvereto, in San Lorenzo Alto. It is home to the agricultural company of the same name that produces wine and oil.
Built between 2001 and 2003 at the behest of Vittorio Moretti and designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the winery occupies an area of about 7,200 square meters and is set in the middle of a vast expanse of vineyards.
It appears as a futuristic structure, characterized by an articulated floor plan, which on the elevation takes the form of a cylinder sectioned by an inclined plane, surrounded at the edges by two side wings screened by long porticoes.
The design, which in some respects harks back to the ancient residences of the Tuscan countryside, combines vegetation design with architectural design: in fact, at the top of the cylindrical block, vegetation is inserted, which, as the seasons change, changes its color, giving rise to an architecture that varies over time.
The central body, cut off externally by a flight of steps, houses tanks for winemaking and, on the ground floor and underground, barrels for aging.
