Acquario, Trieste
Facts and practical information
The Trieste Marine Aquarium was established in Trieste in 1933 in one side of the former Central Fish Market building.
The aquarium has 25 tanks, reconstructing different marine environments, in which it houses mainly Adriatic species. Also on the ground floor are a large octagonal tank housing sharks and rays and one that housed some penguins from South Africa. One penguin specimen, known as Marco, lived in the aquarium for an impressive 31 years.
The second floor is occupied by the vivarium where numerous species of amphibians, reptiles and freshwater fish are housed. There is also a large terrarium where a karst pond is reconstructed in which common toads, green frogs and ululons breed.
